Research is that intelligent guess that comes to one’s mind when a problem evolved, a methodical exploratory procedure employed to increase current knowledge by discovering new ideas. Divided into two general categories:
(1) Basic research: This is an analysis meant for consuming an increasing scientific knowledge.
(2) Applied research: The effort meant for consuming basic research for solving problems or developing new processes, products, or techniques.
An important step in any research is to detect and define the research problem i.e. what (political, scientific or depending on the field of study) the researcher wants to resolve and what questions the researcher wishes to answer.
The Researcher’s Problem
A research problem may be defined as an area of concern, a gap in the existing knowledge, or a deviancy in the norm or standard that points to the need for further understanding and investigation which could serve as a documentary for the future purposes and or record for the upcoming generation. Although many problems turn out to have several solutions (the means to close the gap or correct the deviation), difficulties arise where such means are either not obvious or are not immediately available. This then imposes some research to reach a viable solution.
The ultimate goal of a statement of the problem is to transform a generalized problem (something that bothers you; a perceived lack) into a targeted, well-defined problem; one that can be resolved through focused research and careful decision-making.
Statement of Problem
A statement of the problem should be a clear identity of the purpose of the research project. The researcher must propose the likely side effect of not having the stated topic or what is attached to having the stated topic in quantity or quality. The statement of the problem will also serve as the basis for the introductory section of your final proposal, directing your reader’s attention quickly to the issues that your proposed project will address and provide the reader with a concise statement of the proposed project itself. A statement of the problem need not be long and elaborate: one page is more than enough for a good statement of the problem.
What are the key characteristics of a statement of the problem?
1. A good research problem should have the following characteristics:
2. It should address a gap in knowledge.
3. It should be significant enough to contribute to the existing body of research
4. It should lead to further research
5. The problem should render itself to investigation through the collection of data
6. It should be of interest to the researcher and suit his/her skills, time, and resources
7. The approach towards solving the problem should be ethical
